Ik ben Chris Steeman, geboren in 1961 en ben sinds m’n prille jeugd geïnteresseerd in alles wat met de natuur te maken heeft, waarbij vogels kijken toch altijd een eerste plaats heeft  ingenomen. M’n omzwervingen om vogels te observeren (+6200 soorten gezien) en te fotograferen hebben me inmiddels al in meer dan 80 landen gebracht in alle continenten, meestal als bezoeker maar ook als gids voor diverse buitenlandse organisaties als Birdseekers, Birdquest, RSPB en ook voor diverse privé groepen. Het duurde dan ook niet lang dat ik deze prachtige natuur wou vastleggen op film, eind jaren 70 nog analoog en op dia en sinds 2002 digitaal. Als een gevolg van al dat moois ben ik sinds 2007 ook beginnen te fotograferen onderwater, eerst als leerling-duiker, nadien als instructeur. Ik volg sinds begin jaren 80 de verspreiding van Ruigpootuil in Belgie op (nestkasten hangen, vogels ringen, opvolgen natuurlijke nestholtes en Zwarte Spechtengaten, enz...). Dit project loopt nog steeds.

I'm Chris Steeman, born in 1961 and since my childhood interested in every aspect of nature where birdwatching took always a first place. My birdwatching (+ 6200 species seen) took me all around the world to all continents and explored already more than 80 countries, mostly as a visitor but also as a guide for different birding companies like Birdseekers, Birdquest, RSPB and also for different private groups. I've started to photograph late 70's and changed towards digital since 2002. The underwater experience started onwards from 2007, first as a novice-diver, later became an instructor. Since early 80's i am involved in a project near the distribution of Tengmalm's Owl in Belgium (hanging of nestboxes, bird ringing, checking of natural nest holes and Black Woodpecker nest holes). This project is still running.

Materiaal / Equipment:

Eind jaren zeventig fotografeerde ik met Nikon body's (F3) en Novoflex telelenzen 400 en 600 mm. Kort daarna ben ik overgestapt op Nikkor-objectieven en sinds dan is dit altijd zo gebleven.  De meeste body’s zijn intussen de revue gepasseerd en op dit moment gebruik ik een D4 en D810 en lenzen gaande van breedhoek tot supertele.

Als statief gebruik ik Gitzo carbon GT5532LS en als statiefkop de bekende Wimberley WH-200/2 schommelkop.

Onderwater gebruikte ik in het begin Olympus en Fujifilm compact toestellen. De laatste jaren gebruik ik een D300 in een Subal onderwaterhuis met bijpassende poorten en Inon Z-240 type 4 flitsers.

Als rugzak gebruik ik de Boris van Mr Jan Gear, hier kan je werkelijk alles in kwijt. Is tevens zeer duurzaam, een licht gewicht en past bovendien als handbagage bij de meeste vliegtuigmaatschappijen.

Raw-beelden worden bewerkt in Adobe Photoshop en Lightroom met bijpassende plug-ins en als monitor gebruik ik een professionele Eizo CG 276 voor perfecte kleurweergave.

Late 70's i photographed with Nikon body's (F3) and Novoflex telephoto lenses 400 and 600 mm. Shortly afterwards i switched to Nikkor-objectieven and still use them today. I've used most body's and at this moment i use a D4 and D810 in combination with lenses ranging from wide angle to super telephoto.

I use a Gitzo carbon GT5532LS and a Wimberley WH-200/2 head.

In the beginning of underwater photography i used mainly Olympus and Fujifilm compact camera's, nowadays i use a D300 in a Subal underwater housing with compatible ports and Inon Z-240 type 4 strobes.

I use the Boris backpack of Mr Jan Gear, a lightweight and rugged backpack made for demanding photographers. It also fits as hand luggage om most airlines.

Raw images are edited in Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom including some plug-ins and I use a professional  Eizo CG 276 for perfect color reproduction.
